JFK is five separate terminals stitched together by the AirTrain, and the experience varies wildly by terminal. T4 and T8 are the strongest for long-haul lounges; T5 is JetBlue's home with the best casual food; T1 and T7 feel dated and are being redeveloped. Airside transfers between terminals are not possible, so a connection across terminals means re-clearing security.
01Connections
Minimum realistic connection: 90 minutes same-terminal domestic, 2h+ if you change terminals (AirTrain + re-clear security), 3h for international arrivals connecting onward (immigration, bag re-check).
Airlines publish legal minimums per terminal pair; these figures are our comfortable recommendation, not the legal minimum. Verify with your airline for your specific itinerary.
02Sleep & nap options
Poor. Terminals largely clear out overnight and seating is armrested. The TWA Hotel (landside, near T5) is the only on-airport sleep option; day rooms are sold in blocks. Airside nap pods have come and gone — treat their availability as unverified.
- on airport
TWA Hotel — AirTrain to T5, then a 5-minute walk. The only hotel on JFK grounds. Day rooms are sold in 4-hour blocks; the rooftop pool is open to guests.
- near airport
Hilton Garden Inn JFK / Jamaica area — Free shuttle, 10–20 min depending on traffic. Cluster of shuttle hotels near Jamaica / Van Wyck; cheaper than TWA, no charm.
03Showers
Showers exist inside premium lounges only (T4 Delta One / Virgin Clubhouse, T8 American Flagship / Chelsea, T1 select carrier lounges). No public pay-showers.
04Food & coffee
T5 wins for casual food; T4 has the widest sit-down range; T8 improved sharply after the 2022–2024 rebuild. Prices are high everywhere — eat before security if you're on a budget.
05Wi-Fi & charging
Free airport Wi-Fi across terminals; power outlets are abundant in T4/T5/T8, scarce in T1/T7.
06Lounges at JFK
Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse (T4)
One of the best lounges in the US. If you can access it, arrive early enough to enjoy dinner before boarding.
9.2The Centurion Lounge (T4)
Excellent value if you already hold the card. Not worth building a connection around because of crowding.
807Getting into New York
| Mode | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| AirTrain + LIRR | 35–45 min to Manhattan (Penn Station) | Fastest reliable combo; AirTrain to Jamaica then LIRR. |
| AirTrain + Subway (E/J/Z) | 60–75 min | Cheapest option; not fun with big bags. |
| Taxi (flat rate to Manhattan) | 45–90 min depending on traffic | Flat fare + tolls + tip; avoid 4–7pm. |
| Rideshare | 45–90 min | Designated pickup areas; surge pricing common at peaks. |
08Transit & visa reminder
US entry applies to all arriving international passengers, including those transiting — there is no sterile international transit at JFK. Confirm ESTA / visa before you fly.
09Layover ideas by time window
- Under 4h
Stay airside. Pick the best lounge you can access, or eat at T5 / T4 sit-down spots.
- 4–7h
TWA Hotel day room or the rooftop pool (landside) if your bags are checked through. Budget 30 min each way for security.
- 7h+
Manhattan is possible on an 8h+ layover via LIRR, but only if you have no bags to collect and a flexible attitude. Jamaica, Queens is closer for food.
10Traveler warnings
- Terminal changes require exiting security. Do not assume an airside connection.
- Taxi touts inside the terminal are illegal — use the official taxi rank only.
- Evening thunderstorm delays in summer are common; pad connections in June–August.
11Frequently asked
Can you sleep at JFK overnight?
You can stay in landside areas of most terminals, but seating is uncomfortable and cleaning crews are active. The TWA Hotel at T5 is the only on-airport hotel; nearby Jamaica hotels with shuttles are cheaper.
How long do I need to connect at JFK?
Plan 90 minutes for a same-terminal domestic connection, at least two hours if you change terminals, and three hours for an international arrival connecting to another flight.
Which JFK terminal has the best lounges?
Terminal 4 (Delta One Lounge, Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse, Centurion) and Terminal 8 (American Flagship, Chelsea Lounge) lead. Terminal 5 has limited lounge options.
