LAX is a horseshoe of nine terminals wrapped around a permanently congested loop road. The Tom Bradley International Terminal is the star, with some of the best lounges in the US and a walkable airside connection to Terminals 4–8 (and to 3 via a connector). Getting to the city is the weak point; the Metro people mover and station are changing that.
01Connections
Same terminal: 60–75 min. TBIT↔T4–T8 airside connectors: 90 min. Terminals 1–2 to the rest: bus or a walk outside security, 2h. International arrival onward: 3h.
Airlines publish legal minimums per terminal pair; these figures are our comfortable recommendation, not the legal minimum. Verify with your airline for your specific itinerary.
02Sleep & nap options
Poor. Terminals empty overnight and seating is unfriendly. No airside hotel; a dense cluster of Century Boulevard hotels with shuttles sits five minutes away.
- near airport
Hyatt Regency Los Angeles International Airport — Free shuttle, 5–10 min (Century Blvd). Closest of the Century Boulevard hotels to the terminal loop; runway views from some rooms.
- near airport
H Hotel Los Angeles, Curio Collection — Free shuttle, 5–10 min. Modern rooms with a rooftop pool; a step up from the chain blocks nearby.
03Showers
Premium lounges only (Qantas First, Star Alliance, oneworld, Delta One, Centurion in TBIT/T4).
04Food & coffee
TBIT has the best range; T4/T5 and T7 are solid; T1 improved after its rebuild. Expect airport pricing.
05Wi-Fi & charging
Free, reliable. Charging is good in TBIT and T4–T7, poor in T1–T2.
06Lounges at LAX
Qantas First Lounge
Widely called the best lounge in the US. Oneworld Emeralds on American should walk over.
9.4Star Alliance Lounge
Yes — the open-air terrace overlooking the apron is unique in the US.
8.807Getting into Los Angeles
| Mode | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| LAX shuttle + Metro C/K Line (LAX/Metro Transit Center) | 40–70 min depending on destination | The new transit center connects to Metro rail; the automated people mover to terminals is in phased opening — check status. |
| FlyAway bus | 45–90 min to Union Station / Van Nuys | Reliable, cheap, luggage space. |
| Taxi / rideshare (LAX-it lot) | 30–90 min | Pickups are at the LAX-it lot reached by shuttle or walk; traffic is the wild card. |
08Transit & visa reminder
US entry for all international arrivals; no sterile transit. ESTA or visa required.
09Layover ideas by time window
- Under 4h
Stay airside — the loop road eats time. Lounge or TBIT food hall.
- 4–7h
Manhattan Beach or the In-N-Out by the runway (Sepulveda) with a rideshare; back 2h before departure.
- 7h+
Santa Monica pier and Venice boardwalk by rideshare; avoid downtown in rush hour.
10Traveler warnings
- Terminal 1 and 2 connections to TBIT are landside — allow extra time.
- Rideshare pickup is off-terminal at LAX-it; budget 15–20 minutes.
- Construction for the people mover changes roads and walkways frequently.
