How long does airport security take?

Quick answer

Usually 10–30 minutes, but 45–60+ at large hubs during morning and holiday peaks. Many airports publish live wait times; PreCheck, Fast Track and off-peak departures are the reliable ways to shorten it.

Security time depends on the airport, the hour and your lane. Small and mid-size airports clear in 10–20 minutes most of the day; mega-hubs spike to an hour at the 06:00–09:00 bank and around holidays.

Ways to check: the airport’s app or website (many show live waits), the MyTSA app in the US, and the airline’s app on the day.

Ways to shorten: TSA PreCheck / Global Entry in the US, Fast Track passes (often bundled with lounge access or premium fares) in Europe and Asia, flying mid-morning or mid-afternoon, and having liquids and laptops ready unless you’re in a CT-scanner lane.

European airports now also run EES biometric checks on arrival for non-EU visitors, which adds time on the way in, not through security on the way out.

How early should I get to the airport?

Two hours before a domestic flight, three before an international one, and add 30–45 minutes at mega-hubs, on holiday weekends, or if you're checking bags. PreCheck/Fast Track lets you trim about 30 minutes. Full answer →

Is TSA PreCheck worth it?

If you fly two or more times a year from US airports, yes: shorter lines, shoes and laptops stay put, and many credit cards reimburse the fee. Global Entry costs slightly more and includes PreCheck plus faster US immigration — the better buy for international flyers. Full answer →

What is the 3-1-1 liquids rule?

Each liquid, gel or aerosol in your carry-on must be in a container of 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less, all fitting in one quart-size (1 litre) clear bag, one bag per passenger. Medications and baby food are exempt but may be inspected. Full answer →

Rules change

Airline, airport and government rules change without notice. Treat this as a starting point and confirm with the airline or authority for your specific trip. Request a correction if something is out of date.
